A survey by the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industries and Fisheries-MAAIF has revealed the presence of Tsetse flies in some parts of the country where they had been wiped out.

Stephen Byantware Tibeijuka, the commissioner for crop protection in the ministry of Agriculture told journalists at the government-owned Media Center on Tuesday that they have observed tsetse flies in the Southeastern part of Uganda, which has now spread to the Islands of Kalangala.

According to Tibeijuka, the Ministry has decided to conduct an aerial spray of the tsetse flies in the affected areas to fight the spread of sleeping sickness in humans and Nagana in animals.

Tibeijuka says that they have also sighted tsetse flies spread in the national parks and in areas around national parks. He, however, says that tsetse flies that spread sleeping sickness in the West Nile have been eradicated.

Uganda is to host the 67th session of the council of ministers for the Desert Locust Control Organization of East Africa (DLCO-EA) from Wednesday to Friday this week.
