Members of Parliament from Kassanda District have asked the Government to expedite the provision of food relief supplies to vulnerable people affected by the Ebola epidemic lockdown.
On Saturday, President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni imposed a 21-day lockdown in Kassanda and Mubende District after a case of the Ebola Virus Disease - EVD was confirmed in September.
While addressing a press conference at Parliament on Thursday afternoon, the MPs from Kassanda Frank Kabuye Kibirige (Kassanda South Constituency), Flavia Nabagabe Kalule (District Woman MP), and Dr. Michael Bukenya Yiga (Bukuya County) said the lockdown has affected the livelihoods and welfare of the residents.
The MPs say that they have written to the Office of the Prime Minister - OPM to provide relief food supplies.
Earlier, the MPs who were accompanied by the Kassanda District Local Government leaders included; the RDC, District Speaker, and Chief Administrative Officer met with the police bosses together with Minister of Health Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng, the Incident Commander, and demanded unconditional release of motorists who arrested for alleged violation of curfew rules.
The MPs disclosed that more than 15 cases of human rights abuses resulting from security beating up road users during curfew have been recorded. They also disclosed that security had impounded over 500 motorcycles whose owners were being asked to pay 100,000 Shillings.
