According to Rev. Muhanga, the decision by the clan leaders to boycott the Empango celebrations come after they petitioned the King on September 4th protesting the manner in which Steven Kiyingi was appointed as Prime Minister of Tooro Kingdom, but have since received no response.
The Chairperson of the Council of Tooro Clans, Rev. Willy Kintu Muhanga has called upon the Clans of Tooro not to attend the Empango today where the Kingdom will be celebrating the 27th Coronation anniversary of Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukiidi IV.
According to Rev. Muhanga, the decision by the clan leaders to boycott the Empango celebrations come after they petitioned the King on September 4th protesting the manner in which Steven Kiyingi was appointed as Prime Minister of Tooro Kingdom, but have since received no response.
The petition stated, that the Council sitting on August 26th, 2022 in which the Omukama appointed Kiyingi was not regularly constituted. They say the council lacked a Speaker and a Deputy Speaker since Eng. Julius Mwirumubi who chaired the council sitting was never sworn in as the speaker of the Supreme Council.
The clan heads say that their constitutional rights were violated because the procedure of approving the Prime Minister was not followed as articles 27 and 28 of the kingdom constitution, gives the King the powers to appoint and then the council approves, which was not done.
While addressing the Press on Sunday evening, Rev. Muhanga said that since the King has not taken any action on what they requested in the petition, they have decided to boycott the Coronation anniversary.
He said that on September 13th, 2022 they will also consider taking legal action against the king.
Some of the leaders who petitioned the king, head the clans of Abagaya, Abasita, Abagorongo, Abachwamba, Abaana, Abamoli, Abakulungu and Abagweri.
Today Tooro kingdom will celebrate 200 years of existence and the 27th Coronation Anniversary of King Oyo in a function that will take place at Karuziika Palace in Fort Portal City.
